SALAAM – preventing the riSe of rAdicaLism and islAMophobia through art

Migration flows in UE have increased over the last years. Between 1990 and 2010, in particular the number of Muslims in Europe has risen by 14,5 million, and an increase of 2 percentage points is expected during the next 20 years (Pew Research Center).

The training course SALAAM aims at preventing youth social exclusion which may lead to radicalization, by providing youth workers with competences to transmit shared values of freedom, tolerance and democracy, together with the EU’s priorities. Youth workers play an important role in encouraging and involving young people into active citizenship and in transferring values to marginalized youth, increasing their sense of belonging to a shared community.

In this frame, SALAAM intends to increase the youth workers’ capabilities to work for a global integrations of migrants and fewer opportunities youngsters, by using non formal educational tools, in particular Art and the Reciprocal Maieutic Approach by Danilo Dolci. Besides, it intends to offer a strong contrast to Islamophobia, a growing phenomenon in the European communities because of fears, stereotypes and ignorance of migration flows.

Activities

  • Sharing and cooperation of good practices among national and international realities to develop a concrete answer to the needs of inclusion and preventions of the phenomenon of radicalism and islamophobia;
  • The use of art as a tool to promote intercultural dialogue and to prevent the emergence of ideas linked to the phenomenon of radicalism and islamophobia: through artistic workshops participants will have the opportunity to directly experiment non-formal learning, creative thinking and the use of various art forms (such as painting, public performances through Theatre of Oppressed etc.) to prevent islamophobia and radicalism.
  • Theoretical sessions and practices in order to provide the participants with a wide overview of the basic issues of the project and with non-formal tools to use in the daily interaction with fewer opportunities youngsters.
  • Creation of networks among the European organizations and organizations from the Balkan region.
