In the framework of the GROWE project – Get readers on the wavelength of emotions, the 5-day training on the use of authentic texts in the classroom (such as novels or other fiction books) to develop both linguistic-communication and social-emotional competences in students has been concluded. From 2021 we will offer a training to teachers on the GROWE methodology, and share the content developed together with the three European partners.
In the first two days of the online training, the educators and teachers present had the opportunity to deepen the concepts of disciplinary literacy and social-emotional competences, learning how to integrate them in the classroom through metacognitive teaching, social teaching and the authentic texts.
After the third meeting on formative assessment of students, the value of feedback and the importance of self and peer assessment, participants discussed how to implement text comprehension, writing and cooperative learning strategies at school. Finally, on the last day of the training, lesson planning and analysis according to GROWE objectives were addressed.
Next year, the Centre for Creative Development Danilo Dolci will enter (virtually or in presence, depending on the pandemic situation) secondary and high schools to train other teachers not only of Italian or English – or of those subjects where we are more used to find literature books together with textbooks – but also of science, mathematics, history, …
All of them will learn to use children’s literature texts, even if not strictly related to their subject, but useful to improve students’ skills in that discipline. This will be done through meaningful reading and writing activities, oral comprehension and production, reflections and tools used by the experts.
Each discipline has its own unique vocabulary and components. With GROWE students will learn about the different nuances of knowledge of the various disciplines that can be generated through the written language. At the same time, they will continue with the development of their own subject-related skills.
GROWE wants to contribute to the commitment of making all citizens of Europe capable of reading and writing to the extent that they can act and develop in society, at home, at school and at work, and achieve their aspirations as individuals, family members, workers and citizens.
